A few weeks ago I had lunch with an idol of mine, Dan Miller from 48days.com. He was speaking at the CES Conference in Louisville that I attended. If you aren’t familiar with Dan you should really check him out.
I mentioned to him that the very last job I had was washing windows. I was in graduate school at the time and I was washing windows because it was a sure thing. It took a long time to realize exactly what those hours working for someone else’s vision was costing me.
Once I finally stopped washing windows and focused on my business we blew the doors off. Eventually I had to even drop out of graduate school to work on finding more books to sell online. So I never did get to have a job where I had to wear a suit and tie to work, but that doesn’t bother me one bit.
I have never in my life worked so hard as the 24 months after I quit washing windows. And now I get to reap the rewards of that and spend most of my time pursuing things that may not offer returns immediately, but possibly at some time in the future. I get to play the long game because of the systems that I built in those first 24 months and that we continue to build on today.
Most of what I do with selling books on amazon and the related facebook community doesn’t net me much (if any) financial rewards immediately. However, I have formed some amazing business partnerships from creating this blog as well as some really great friends.
A lot of you guys know Ford Perry. He is one of my best friends now and we learn a whole lot from one another. I met him directly through creating a product for my website. I think over the next five years my partnerships with Ford and others related to the SFB community will generate more income for me than my current business.
None of that could happen without the ability to spend my work time in ways that don’t create linear income. I have time to throw spaghetti at the wall and see what sticks because I don’t have the pressure of making sure I can feed my family next week.
I saw all of that to say this. If you are still washing windows….. please stop it. Stop washing windows right now and start throwing spaghetti instead.
